Bike to School Day
Next Friday April 29th will be Bike to School day. Students that walk or bike to school will get a frozen yogurt at 3pm in the quad. We will make an all call for anyone that rode their bike or scooter to school to come out to the quad at 3 so please have them pack up and meet us out there. They have to have their helmet on to get their frozen yogurt. TK and Kindergarten we will have to talk as the frozen yogurt doesn't come until 2:50.

A Look at the Week Ahead
4/24 Run 4 Roseville. Hope to see you there!
4/25 TK-1 Writing Training 2:15-4:15. TK-1 teachers she said you do not have to bring anything but I would bring your laptop. I will be at the training as well so if you are in grades 2-5 and need anything from me please email me.
4/26 I'm at leadership
4/27 Staff meeting 3:30-4:30. We will be going over how to create a google form and how to view results. I know not everyone is doing a parent survey but enough people are that it makes sense to do it at a staff meeting. Also everyone can benefit from learning how to use forms better. 4/28 SST and IEP day all day

Open Your Door: Why We Need to See Each Other Teach- Cult of Pedagogy Hopefully you have enjoyed getting to see others teacher this year. Good article from a teacher why they feel it is important.
When is it okay to say you’ve done “enough” for a student?- Angela Watson Thanks Jill and Christi for sharing this one with me. A great reminder to everyone when it is ok to say you have done enough for a student.
Standardized Testing by John Oliver Great 18 minute video on standardized testing. John Oliver is a comedian and definitely not appropriate so don't watch if you don't like anything above PG-13. Once again do not watch around kids or if you do not like strong language.
The Case For and Against Homework- Robert J. Marzano and Debra J. Pickering
Here is a balanced article for that gives pros and cons of homework. From the article:
Although teachers across the K–12 spectrum commonly assign homework, research has produced no clear-cut consensus on the benefits of homework at the early elementary grade levels. In his early meta-analysis, Cooper (1989a) reported the following effect sizes (p. 71):
Grades 4–6: ES = .15 (Percentile gain = 6)
Grades 7–9: ES = .31 (Percentile gain = 12)
Grades 10–12: ES = .64 (Percentile gain = 24)
The pattern clearly indicates that homework has smaller effects at lower grade levels. Even so, Cooper (1989b) still recommended homework for elementary students because homework for young children should help them develop good study habits, foster positive attitudes toward school, and communicate to students the idea that learning takes work at home as well as at school.
.15 is a very small effect size for grades 4-6 (John Hattie says that something has to have an effect size of .40 to worth working on and having a true difference). I also wish they broke down effect size by subject area.
